e
ZE
hybrid Drives' basic oil cooled electric drive module is a compact, easily manufactured package with enhanced cooling and rapidly synchronized shifting ability (see Figure 1 below). These enhanced features will be proven in extensive lab testing at BGSU and e
ZE
hybrid Drives. Prototype demonstrations on a variety of vehicles and applications are underway.
As outlined below, e
ZE
hybrid Drives' OCED module is designed to be low cost and low weight and to maximize manufacturing economies of scale.
Oil-Cooled Motor
Custom stator windings and oil cooling permits higher current draw and higher motor speeds.
Using standard
AC induction motor rotors and stators
eliminates the need for costly special rotor or stator core laminations, as well as the lead time and expensive tooling required to make them.
Using motor parts already being produced in high quantities provides automatic economies of scale.
Less weight: the design under development will weigh approximately 290 lbs, which is about half the weight of the competition. Since transit shuttle buses typically weigh close to their maximum rating, a hybrid drive that weighs less requires fewer tradeoffs
Lower cost: the OCED produces 8 to 10 times more horsepower than standard electric motors of similar size, so that smaller electric motors can be used to achieve the desired performance. Smaller motors cost less than larger motors, leading to direct cost savings.
Rapidly Synchronizing Mechanical Connect/Disconnect
Disengages the OCED module at high vehicle speeds.
Rapidly Synchronizes the OCED drive with the vehicle drive shaft speed.
Engages the OCED module for regenerative braking during vehicle deceleration.
Modular Design
The basic design is scalable to larger and smaller sizes to maximize common parts and reduce time to market.
Motor speeds and voltages can be easily tailored through custom stator windings to match specific vehicle needs without changing other OCED hardware.
The oil-cooled motor and the first stage gearing can be readily combined with a variety of output configurations for different vehicle needs.
Retrofit
The OCED module can be easily retrofitted as a post-transmission parallel hybrid.
